Met with a group of people from an organization called the Foundation for Learning Equality. The Foundation for Learning Equality (FLE), a California-based nonprofit organization, dedicated to creating tools for the sharing and creation of open-licensed educational content for use by anyone around the world, with special emphasis on reaching the 65% of the world that does not have Internet access, and those with limited or expensive bandwidth.
They have created an offline version of Khan Academy. Both a server and a user interface. The server runs on a rasberry pi. The server runs through wifi which means that the client computers can access ti through the wifi cards. For schools this means that even if you have school network you are not dependent on it for access to the Khan Academy. This is not a small issue, online learning sites can suck up bandwidth. But it also means that the program can be used by students with out reliable internet access at home.
I am going to be piloting a version of this next year in my classroom next year. Pretty exciting!
